Procedural Considerations for Mastery Skills

If the child becomes overwhelmed by affect, the child is most likely to attribute the discomfort to the EMDR therapy and the therapeutic process. Like adults, children need time to integrate what is occurring in therapy without becoming overwhelmed. Teaching containers, affect management, resourcing, and mastery skills is a critical part of the modulating process. However, it can happen that the therapist has a hesitancy to target severe trauma, which then delays trauma reprocessing. Therapists sometimes rely too heavily on resourcing when a child did not need so much skill building. Some therapists have expressed angst about targeting the most horrendous traumas with child clients. This can be an issue for therapists. Therapists need to consider whether it is the child who is not prepared to reprocess the target memory, or perhaps it is the therapist’s countertransference issue. Many times it is the therapist who is not prepared to handle the child’s trauma. It is not uncommon for therapists to experience vicarious trauma from the severity of the child’s experiences. It is important for therapists to be aware of their own countertransference issues with children.
